So, you want to get an apprenticeship?
June 27, 2023
If you’re interested in getting a trade, then an apprenticeship is the way to go.
In Western Australia, trade apprenticeship schemes give you structured, on-the-job training as well as formal education to develop skills in a particular trade. They usually take around three to four years to complete, depending on the trade and training plan.
Apprenticeships are available to people of all ages. You might be a school leaver, looking for a career change, or wanting to upskill. All you need is your Year 10 certificate, plus basic reading and writing skills.
There are three types of apprenticeships:
• Full-Time Apprenticeships
• Part-Time or School-Based Apprenticeships: for high-school students who combine work, study, and school
• Adult Apprenticeships: for people aged 21 or older
How to become an apprentice
First, choose your trade. Then, find a registered employer in your chosen trade. Employers often hire through job advertisements, Group Training Organisations (GTOs), or pre-apprenticeship programs.
Both the apprentice and employer sign a training contract registered with the Apprenticeship Office (part of the WA Department of Training and Workforce Development).
The next step is choosing a training provider. A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) delivers the educational part of the apprenticeship, either in a classroom or online.
The training provider works with the employer to develop a Training Plan, either on the job, or formal training off the job.
Once you’ve successfully completed both the practical and formal training, you’ll get a nationally recognised Certificate III qualification.
Need financial support?
Apprentices may be eligible for incentives like living allowances or subsidies through the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program. Employers may receive funding or wage subsidies to encourage hiring apprentices.
Apprentices are paid under the relevant award rates set by Fair Work Australia. Pay increases as apprentices progress through their training stages.
